Infrastructures and buildings are built on a material that is heterogeneous in nature and whose properties are imposed by its origin: the ground. Soil or rock, the ground plays an important role in the cost and viability of any infrastructures and buildings during both their construction and their operation. Thus, knowing the ground and properly characterizing it, stands essential. This Book deals with the geotechnical engineering techniques and methods used to carry out a useful and successful study of the ground. Beginning by laying the foundations for a good geotechnical planning, which must be supported on the use of appropriate geological-geotechnical cartography,the Book shows the different techniques for terrain recognition and auscultation, addresses the geotechnical description of rock masses and summarizes the more common laboratory tests used in soils and rocks. All this based on the recommendations and principles given in relevant technical documentation such as the "Guía de Cimentaciones en Obras de Carretera" of Spain and the recommendations of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISMR)

Torrijo Echarri, Francisco Javier Doctor en Geología e ingeniero civil. Profesor del Departamento de Ingeniería del Terreno de la Universitat Politècnica de València. Ha desarrollado su vida profesional en empresas geotécnicas, en el sector público y en el ámbito universitario. Es subdirector del Departamento de Ingeniería del Terreno, investigador del mismo departamento y profesor visitante en diversas universidades de Argentina, Ecuador y Perú. Imparte docencia en asignaturas de grado relacionadas con la ingeniería geotécnica y la geología aplicada a la ingeniería civil. Sus líneas de investigación actuales se centran en la interacción suelo-estructura, el estudio de estabilidad de taludes y el comportamiento de materiales rocosos en la construcción de túneles. Garzón Roca, Julio Doctor en Ingeniería de Caminos, Canales y Puertos. Antiguo profesor del Departamento de Ingeniería del Terreno de la Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) y actualmente trabaja como investigador en el Departamento de Ingeniería Civil y Medio Ambiente de la Universidad de Surrey (Reino Unido). Ha trabajado asimismo como investigador en el Departamento de Ingeniería de la Construcción y del Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología del Hormigón de la UPV, y en el Departamento de Ingeniería Civil de la Universidade do Minho (Portugal). Además, ha desarrollado su vida profesional como consultor independiente de estructuras y geotecnia. Sus líneas de investigación se centran en la interacción suelo-estructura y el estudio de la estabilidad de taludes. Cobos Campos, Guillermo Doctor en Ingeniería de Caminos, Canales y Puertos. Profesor del Departamento de Ingenie-ría del Terreno de la Universitat Politècnica de València. Ha desarrollado su vida profesional en empresas de ingeniería civil y en el ámbito universitario.
